Swift, Clive Leslie

Clive was born on the 1st November 1924 in Elsternwick, Victoria, and enlisted in the RAAF in Melbourne on the 29th January 1943. After he completed his training, he was posted to 452 Squadron. He also spent a short time with 457 Squadron on temporary duties from December 1944 to February 1945 and then returned to 452 Squadron. He completed his Tour in August 1945 and was discharged from the RAAF in January 1946.

Apart from that, we don’t know much about Clive. At that stage of the War, 452 Squadron had joined the 1st Tactical Air Force and had been relocated to Morotai in the Dutch East Indies. Its purpose there was to support the Australian operations in Borneo (Kalimantan). Following the landing at Balikpapan on the 1st of July 1945, a detachment of 452 Squadron Spitfires moved there on the 15th of July, to support the land campaign. The Squadron’s last sortie of the war was flown on the 10th of August 1945 about the time when Clive finished his Tour.

Similarly at that time, 457 Squadron was with 452 Squadron as part of the newly formed No.80 Wing RAAF. 452 Squadron was based in Sattler in the Northern Territory and moved to Morotai Island in the Netherlands East Indies to take part in Allied offensives in Borneo in February 1945. 457 Squadron flew its first operations from Morotai on the 10th February, but it is not known if Clive was with the Squadron then, or had been moved back to 452 Squadron.
