Heaton, Joseph H.

Joseph, or Little Joe as he was known to his friends, was born in York, England on the 25th March 1922 and he enlisted in the RAAF in Sydney on the 22nd April 1940.  

He trained as a Fitter IIa and joined 457 Squadron RAAF. The photo is of some of the 457 Ground Crew at Livingstone in the Northern Territory in1943. From left to right, back row: Jack Williams, Des Walsh and Jack Stewardson. Front row: Little Joe Heaton and Ron Lambert.

Little Joe got a lot out of life and became close friends with Jack Williams (in the photo) and when he returned to Australia, he married Jack’s sister. He was a teetotaller all his life. Williams Jack Pic 1

Little Joe was discharged on the 7th December 1945 from the School of Army Cooperation. He moved to Canberra and was employed in the Government Bus Service until he retired.
