After training, Bob joined 153 Squadron RAF and was at first flying Defiants before converting over to Beaufighters. In 1943, he flew the Beaufighter with 89 Squadron RAF in the Malta campaign. At one time, he crashed in Tunisia, and had to walk home 65 miles through the gruelling Sahara Desert. Bob was then posted to 108 Squadron RAF as an instructor teaching night flying.
Later, he joined 456 Squadron RAAF shortly before D-Day and became Commanding Offoicer. He finishing the war flying the Mosquito XV11 on “Intruder” missions.
During the war, Bob had six air victories and one damaged.
