Barnes, John Loughnan

John was born on the 23rd April 1911 in Quirindi, NSW. He enlisted in Brisbane on the 5th January 1941 and was posted with 55 Operational base Unit. He was killed on the 20th April 1943.

According to the accident report A16-183 dated 23 March 1942: Accident 1920 zulu (0610 hrs) 20/04/43 after taking off on a reconnaissance mission (HUG.46) to Timoeka DNG, when it was involved in a mid-air collision with Hudson A16-197 some four minutes later. A16-183 crashed on one of the Crocodile Islands north east of Millingimbi. Crew F/O K R Mills Serv#405637, F/O R E John Serv#409551, Sgt H H Hadley Serv#411904, Sgt J L Barnes Serv#404946 and Sgt T W Bassen Serv#411985 all killed. Wreck area located within 600 yards of wreck of A16-197. SOC 24/09/43.

John is buried at the Adelaide River War Cemetery (refer photo) at grave C.B.13. He was the son of Harold claude and Constance Charlotte Barnes, and husband of Nena Bryden Barnes of Mitchell, Queensland.
